How much will it cost to hire an apprentice for a larger employer?
As you are a large employer with a wage bill greater than ÂŁ3 Million
You will be required to pay the apprenticeship levy. Watch our video below for more information
You can click the button below to understand more about CITB’s levy grants and funding
Use the toggle below to view two different examples of training costs
Using levy
Co-investment
Example Costs using levy
If you were to recruit an apprentice plasterer Level 2 the funding maximum band is ÂŁ10,000. This means that this is the maximum amount a training provider can charge for the training, however its worth selecting the right accredited training provider for you and your business and where possible negotiate the cost of the training.
A Plasterer Level 2 qualification is ÂŁ10,000
(This is the Maximum cost and could be much lower)
Funded out of your Levy = ÂŁ10,000
Additional cost of training to employer = ÂŁ0
If you use all of your levy funds in the account you can still take on apprentices, but you will be required to co-invest in their training. This means:
• You’ll pay 5% towards the cost of training and assessing your apprentice
• The government will pay the remaining 95%, up to the funding band maximum
• If your apprentice’s training and assessment cost more than this, you’ll pay the difference
Your apprenticeship service account would automatically enter you into co-investment if you were to exhaust all the levy, you would see a new column appear in the finance section showing the governments contributions, and then the training provider would invoice you that remaining 5%.

Using the same example of recruiting a Level 2 Plasterer and you have exhausted all your levy funds, you as the employer would need to pay 5% towards the cost of the training.
A Plasterer Level 2 qualification is ÂŁ10,000
(This is the Maximum cost and could be much lower)
Funded out of your Levy = ÂŁ9,500
Additional cost of training to employer = ÂŁ500
You can use our apprenticeship cost calculator via the button below to calculate the costs of training and employing an apprentice.
